Five Overlooked PS3 Games You Should Play

With blockbuster franchises like Gears of Wars, Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto typically dominating the coverage on gaming sites there are often times when some great games slip through the net of visibility.

With that in mind here I’m going to take a look at five great games on the PS3 that you have probably never played…but definitely should.

5. Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

Enslaved is a great action adventure game that was released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. The story sounds like it was plucked straight from an Arnold Schwarzenegger that never saw the light of day. You play as the big and burly Monkey. After escaping a crash on an airship carrying slaves Monkey awakes to find himself fitted with a slave headband. A young redhead called Trip has enslaved Monkey, giving him the task of helping her reach her homeland 300 miles away. There is also Pigsy, so called for his short and fat stature, who will help you on your way.

There’s a lot of climbing, platforming and co-operation required. For example, as Monkey, you can tell Trip to act as a decoy – drawing the enemies’ fire – while you rush passed their line of fire.

The game is also noticeable for the fact that Monkey is the spitting image of former WWE (and current ROH) wrestler Charlie Haas.

4. Heavenly Sword

You like God of War, right? Of course you do! Heavenly Sword is more of the same only with a flame haired heroine named Nariko rather than Kratos.

Nariko is part of a clan whose duty it is to protect the Heavenly Sword – a sword of incredible power that drains the wielder of their life force. Right at the start of the game Nariko dies from using the Heavenly Sword. When she wakes up she begins to reminisce the events of the last five days that led her to using the cursed sword and giving up her life.

While the game is quite short (you can complete it in less than twenty hours) it is quality not quantity that should matter and Heavenly Sword has quality in abundance.

3. Devil May Cry 4

Devil May Cry is the biggest franchise name on this list, no doubt, but I don’t feel this game received the credit or sales it deserved – especially in Europe.

While the story is an interesting one, what stands out about Devil May Cry 4 are the graphics and the incredibly stylish combat system. You will shoot and slice your way through enemies and love every minute of it.

Although it would help, you don’t need to have played previous Devil May Cry games to enjoy the fourth installment in the series.

2. Folklore

Folklore is an action adventure RPG released in 2007. The release date itself could be the reason Folklore didn’t sell too well as the PS3 had a notoriously slow pick-up rate.

The main characters of Folklore are a cute blonde woman called Ellen and a journalist named Keats. The game itself is split into two worlds, one a quaint village called Doolin, the other the more fantastic Netherworld. The style of the game changes between worlds, Doolin plays more like an explorative RPG while the Netherworld is much more action adventure based.

The characters themselves also have striking differences. In battle Keats powers his way through enemies with brute force while Ellen uses a system of magic known as “folk”. You only play as one character at a time.

It’s the change of worlds and characters that keep Folklore feeling fresh all the way through the storyline of the game.

1. Valkyria Chronicles

Are you the Arnold Rimmer type who dreams of leading his troops to a famous victory? Well in Valkyria Chronicles you can, but you won’t be able to sit atop a hill watching the battle whilst sipping on champagne – you’ll be right in the thick of the action!

Valkyria Chronicles presents itself as an anime history book, chronicling the events of the Europa War of 1935. As Welkin you lead a customizable squad of lovable characters who must defeat Maximillian and his evil empire. Different units have different strengths and weaknesses. Scouts can move further per turn but aren’t as effective at shooting as Infantry. Tanks (the vehicle not characters with high HP and defence) can steamroll through sandbags and walls but they’re vulnerable to Lancers.

Not only is the gameplay strong but the story is so well told that you will actually begin to care for the characters and root for them in their own personal stories.

The thing that I think harms the popularity of Valkryia Chronicles is that there is no trophy support. But stop being a trophy whore for awhile and you’ll be rewarded with one of the best games on the PS3.

Enslaved (PS3 | Xbox 360) | £7.95 | Zavvi

Enslaved is an action-adventure platformer that received strong reviews from both IGN and Gamespot (8’s all round). I’ve been thinking about buying this game for awhile and at £7.95 from Zavvi I couldn’t help myself!

You play as Monkey (no – not the one from the PG Tips adverts) who has had a slaves headband placed on him, forcing him to follow the orders of a woman named Trip. She wants to trek 300 miles to return home and Monkey has no choice but to help her.
