Tales of a RPG Maker – Week 7

Creating an area for enemies to appear.

This week has been a welcome change from map designing as I’ve been adding enemies to the area around the first town in game (Derwent) as well as adding in a couple of characters the player can interact with.

There are around 30 ready made sprites for enemy characters and this number can be expanded by changing the colour of each sprite. Want a Fire Slime to go in Hellpit Cave? You can do it very easily by sliding the hue bar. It’s a handy feature which helps to increase the number of enemies you can create for your party to fight although it can result in FFX syndrome where every area seems to have the same enemies only with different elemental strengths/weaknesses.

The town of Derwent is finally finished, inside and out. *And Jake gave a heavy sigh of relief.*

Only four towns to go!…*gulp*

Frankly I can’t face spending anymore time on creating houses next weeks so I’m going to be moving on to creating a few enemies to be fought around the area of Derwent. This should give me a much welcome break from interior design.

Home sweet home?

First things first (that’s usually the best place for them unless you’re Quentin Tarantino), I have a confession to make. I’ve done very little work on the project this week for a couple of reasons. First of all I’ve been messing around on the trial for RPG Maker VX Ace (more on that later). Secondly I made the mistake of buying Tekken 6, Little Big Planet 2, and Fight Night Champion and while I’ve found Tekken to be a bit of a miss LBP2 and Fight Night Champion are both incredibly addictive in their own ways. Together they’ve taken up a lot of my spare time this week.

The local farm.

Has it really been a month already? That seems depressing because I don’t feel like I’m even 1% of the way through finishing this project. I just have to keep reminding myself that Rome wasn’t built in a day…and it certainly wouldn’t have been if I was in charge.

This week I have been working on creating the houses, armoury and inn of Derwent which is the first town in the game that the main character Orion will visit. As a bit of a loner Orion doesn’t live in a town, instead he lives in a creaky shack in the sticks.

As you can see by the pictures scattered around this article the buildings are coming together nicely. Admittedly I don’t have much of an eye for perspective but there’s nothing eye-catchingly bad about the rooms…or at least I don’t think there is. Either way a game made using RPG Maker VX is never going to have jaw-dropping graphics so I’m just plugging away building up the houses and towns until I can move on to adding the story into the game.

Tales of a RPG Maker – Week 3

(Don’t know what this is all about? Read the introduction here)

Week 3 of the RPG Maker project is upon us and I’ve been spending yet another week creating game locations…and I still have many more to make.

The icy labyrinth...of doom!

I started the week by creating a few dungeons. This can be done very quickly thanks to the “Generate Dungeon” feature where you choose the visual tiles and then a labyrinth like dungeon is randomly created based on that look.

As you can see by the picture on the right, the dungeon is very maze like and will house a group of ice-based enemies that I’ve yet to create (enemy creations comes much later). Wouldn’t it be handy to have a character well versed in fire magic?

Speaking of which I also started work on creating the inside of the homes of some characters (both playable and NPC).
